Privacy Policy

This policy explains what AlgebraLoop LLC (“AlgebraLoop”, “we”, “us”) collects from people who use algebraloop.com and the AlgebraLoop practice service (the “Service”), how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to students, teachers and school staff, and visitors.

Three commitments come first. We do not show advertising. We do not sell personal information, and we never will. We do not use student information to build a profile for anything other than helping that student learn math.

Where a school or district has signed a data privacy agreement with us, that agreement governs student data if it conflicts with this policy.

From students. Students do not create accounts. When a student starts practicing, we collect the name and school the student types, the course and units they choose, the answers they submit, whether each answer was accepted, timing, streaks, and mastery estimates, and the dates and times of each session. We do not ask students for an email address, password, photo, date of birth, or home address.

From teachers and school staff. Name, work email address, school and district, a password (stored only as a salted hash), the class periods and assignments you create, and the student names on your class lists.

From every visitor, automatically. Our servers log the IP address, browser and device type, pages requested, referring page, and timestamps. We use this to keep the Service running and secure. We do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.

When you write to us. We keep the messages you send to hello@algebraloop.com so we can respond and keep a record of the conversation.

• To run the Service: generate and check problems, track progress, and show teachers the class overview for the sets they assigned.
• To support teachers and schools, including answering questions and fixing problems you report.
• To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and debug errors.
• To improve problem generators and the Service using de-identified, aggregated data, such as how often a type of problem is missed.
• To meet our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

We do not use personal information for advertising or marketing to students, and we do not use personally identifiable student information to train AI models. We only email teachers and school staff about the Service itself, such as security notices, changes to this policy, and account matters.

Student data belongs to the school. We collect and process student information as a service provider to the school, at the school’s direction, and only for the school’s educational purposes. We do not disclose it except as described in this policy or as the school instructs.

FERPA. When a school shares education records with us, we act as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (34 C.F.R. § 99.31(a)(1)). We use those records only for the purposes the school authorizes, remain under the school’s direct control with respect to their use and maintenance, and do not re-disclose them except as FERPA permits.

COPPA. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 except when a school has directed its students to use the Service. In that case the school provides consent on behalf of parents, as permitted by the Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on COPPA in schools, and we use the information only for the school’s educational purposes. A parent may review the information we hold about their child, ask that it be deleted, or refuse further collection by contacting the child’s school, which will relay the request to us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without school authorization, we delete it.

State student privacy laws. We follow the student privacy laws of the states where our partner schools are located, including the Tennessee Student Online Personal Information Protection Act and Georgia’s Student Data Privacy, Accessibility, and Transparency Act. In line with those laws, we do not use student information for targeted advertising, build a profile of a student except to support learning, sell or rent student information, or disclose it except as permitted by law and this policy.

We share personal information only in these situations:

• With the school. Teachers see the progress of students on their class lists. School and district administrators may see data for their schools under a district agreement.
• With service providers that host our servers, deliver email, and monitor errors. They may process data only on our instructions, are bound by contracts that require them to protect it, and may not use it for their own purposes.
• When the law requires it, such as in response to a valid subpoena or court order. If the request concerns student data, we notify the school before responding unless the law prohibits it.
• If AlgebraLoop is acquired or merges with another company. The successor would be bound by this policy for data collected under it. We would notify partner schools before any transfer, and a school could ask us to delete its data instead.

We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.

• Student data under a school license is kept for the term of the license so teachers can see progress across the year. We delete it within 60 days after the license ends, or sooner on the district’s written request.
• Sample and unlicensed use. If a student practices without a school license, we delete that session data within 12 months.
• Teacher accounts are kept until the teacher or school asks us to delete them, and are deleted within 30 days of the request.
• Server logs are kept for up to 90 days for security and debugging.
• Backups may hold copies for up to 90 days after deletion, after which they expire. De-identified, aggregated data may be kept indefinitely.

We encrypt data in transit and at rest, limit access to the people who need it to operate the Service, require strong authentication for administrative access, log access to production systems, and review our practices regularly. No system is perfectly secure, so we also plan for incidents: if we discover a breach that affects student data, we notify the affected districts without unreasonable delay and within the time required by applicable law, and we help them meet their own notification obligations.

Students and parents. Because students do not have accounts with us, requests to review, correct, or delete a student’s information go through the school. Ask your teacher or district; they can relay the request to us and we will act on it promptly. You can also clear the name stored in your browser at any time, which removes it from that device.

Teachers and school staff. You can review and update your account information in the Service, and you can ask us to delete your account by emailing hello@algebraloop.com.

Schools and districts can request an export or deletion of their data at any time under their agreement with us.

If you have a concern about how we handle your information that we cannot resolve, you may also contact your state attorney general or the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office.

We use only the storage the Service needs to work. Teachers get a session cookie so they stay signed in. A student’s typed name and school are saved in the browser’s local storage on that device so the student does not have to retype them; they are not sent to any third party. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking. Because we do not track visitors across other sites, we do not respond differently to “Do Not Track” signals.

Our servers are located in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.

We may update this policy as the Service or the law changes. We will post the new version here with a new “last updated” date. For material changes to how we handle student data, we will email district contacts and teacher account holders at least 30 days before the change takes effect, and we will not make material changes to student data practices without a district’s consent where its agreement or the law requires it.
